Connecting stacks, screen recording, maps & territories, go small

Hey there, we got a little off-cycle, but weā€™re back and swinging with a link to a video on a great way to stack your business tech and some ideas to chew on for small businesses.

stack ā€˜em up

-stacking is to create simple and repeatable routines using ideas, tools and/or systems that build momentum and synergy.

A business stack at its finest, would be a collection of apps, linked together and built into a cohesive system. This guy seems to have that nailed down.

He uses Zapier to link applications, collect data, and keep himself organized.

  • Google Sheets

  • Content Snare

  • Buffer

  • AirTable

For simplicity, I lean towards all-in-ones, (Odoo, Zoho) but do admit you lose the expertise and specialization that comes from apps that were made for their ā€˜oneā€™ thing.

In which case, if you donā€™t need a whole suite, taking the best and connecting (however that may look) would be the next ideal thing.

I took it upon myself to assist with the thumbnail game, though, tell me what do you think? Yay or nay? Hit reply and infuse or bruise my ego.

Cool apps for recordingā€¦ there are so many right now with AI and podcasts popping off.

Flexclip is a screen share and front camera recording software that makes it easy to record a video for sharing later, where you predominately want to share your screen. I did not test flipping the camera mid-stream.

This comes across as a competitor to Loom, which wins in the ease of use, but Flexclip wins for editing options. The only thing I didnā€™t like was that the editor seems like it was lagging and the download took forever. Overall though, I would be likely to reuse.

I use Loom to create work instructions for training. And I love how quickly I can click record and go, right from the chrome browser. The editor is ridiculously simple and is great for done over perfect.

Descript would also be more of a competitor for Flexclip. I liked Descript for podcasts, and would likely opt for it over Flexclip, but I am basing this on memory as it has been a couple of months since I used Descript. From memory, the UI/UX seemed a bit better to use and edit with.

I also didnā€™t get a chance to try all the features of Flexclip, because they didnā€™t give a trial of all the features, just some of them.

sharp ideas

The phrase ā€œmental modelā€ is an overarching term for any sort of concept, framework, or worldview that you carry around in your mind. Mental models help you understand life. Any idea, belief, or concept can be distilled down.

"The map is not the territory" and that "the word is not the thing"

The map and territory is a metaphor used to illustrate the difference between the actual world and our understanding of the world as we perceive it to be.

Like you, Iā€™m growing a business, balancing customer demands, people additions, administration, accounting, and on and on.

Part of that means creating templates, that we can use to delegate tasks and standardize processes.

But that creates new problems - how do you know when itā€™s time to change the template?

A mantra that has been beat into me is, ā€œmake the best decisions we can with the information we have,ā€ and then as new information comes in we adapt.

Adapt or die.

Seems a similar idea as the map isnā€™t the territory. As a business person, you cannot be complacent with the current process, information or systems.

You need consistent results, you need repeatable processesā€” you also need to be constantly ready to accept the process doesnā€™t align anymore.

Another one we hate to recognizeā€” that as a business changes so do what we need of people. Sometimes people fit in the beginning and donā€™t after awhile.

I have found thatā€™s ok, and sometimes while it hurts to acknowledgeā€” everyone is happier when the right people are in the right places.

quote Iā€™m musing

Buddha said, ā€œwhat you think, you becomeā€¦ā€ so while quotes wonā€™t change your life, I do think they can shift your perspective, and that can be life changing.

Thereā€™s nothing wrong with staying small. You can do big things with a small team.

Small businesses can be fascinating. You can do things the big guys canā€™t.

Big business and public companies have shareholders šŸ™„, people who want answers.

Small means agility, velocity, and creativity.

Working for a small business gives you the chance to have authority, and responsibility that a large company wants a MBA for.

I have no ā€œformalā€ education, but have been running a production facility, building financial reporting packages, and even doing inventory audits for over 5 years.

Go small itā€™s way more fun.
